Max Hollmann was the men’s interval start 15k champion.

It was another great day of racing at the Nakkertok Ski Centre in Gatineau as Day 3 of racing commenced at the 96th Canadian Championships organized by Gatineau Nordic Events (ENGNE).

After winning the sprint event on Tuesday, Morin Height’s, Quebec skier, Olivia Bouffard-Nesbitt(Fondeur-Laurentides) added distance gold to her collection in the 15k skate race. Olivia gained a bit of a lead at the start and battled back and forth a bit over the 6-lap race with junior racer Clara Hegan from Ottawa, (Nakkertok) and the Thunder Bay Training Centre. It was Bouffard-Nesbitt a Beijing Olympian that prevailed over Hegan by 16.5 seconds just ahead of another junior Alison Mackie from Edmonton. Nakkertok’s Anna Stewart was 4th and Helen McCulligh of Kanata was 6th, the third junior.

Olivia Bouffard-Nesbitt: The conditions were amazing, they are my favourite conditions rock solid and fast. That made for really fun racing.

Clara Hegan: “I’m super proud of my performances this week, I couldn’t be more stoked that it was at my home club with all my family and friends cheering me on”. Clara had also skied to 4th in the open sprint race on Tuesday, 2nd Junior.

On the men’s side Thunder Bay’s Max Hollmann took an early lead over Racine, Quebec’s Olivier Léveillé and maintained a consistent pace to finish with a 38 second lead and the gold medal. Julien Locke of Nelson B.C. (Black Jack S.C) was 3rd.

Kanata’s Aidan Kirkham (uOttawa) was the top local skier in 8th.

Max Hollmann:With all the rain I thought the whole series of races could be cancelled, I was shocked and impressed with all the volunteer effort that was done to get the trails back in good condition.” I could see Olivier in the same place every lap, so I knew we were close and had to wait at the finish line to see who had won”.

Samuel Picard of Saint-Urbain-de-Charlevoix (Fondeur Laurentide) was the junior men’s champ, followed by Noah Weir Chaba from Canmore and Lukas Seubert of Edmonton.

The final races of the Championships will be held at 8:30 on Thursday.
